%X A record was kept of all requests for medical assistance during regional fencing championships in the 1985-86 season. A total of 1365 fencers took part in 6802 bouts. The 58 requests for medical attention related to injuries were classified as follows: a) lesions caused by the opponent's weapon (48%); b) derangement due to functional overloading (14%); c) injuries caused by direct bodily contact (9%); d) other derangements (29%); including ankle sprains (7%) and cramp (7%). The results indicate that injuries during fencing contests are infrequent and not serious in the majority of cases.<p />
