%X While there is an urgent movement all over the world to raise consciousness about gender-based violence as the most obvious form of discrimination against women, in a post-communist society such as Hungary there appears to be a contrary tendency: a withdrawal of the state from the areas of 'private' violence (Morvai, 2001). This paper seeks to assess the current state of awareness of domestic violence in Hungary, in the context of recent policy developments.<p />
