%X The history of manual lifting techniques and resulting stresses in components of the human trunk are reviewed. papers by Bradfors and Spurling (1945) and Bartelink (1957) are utilized to develop a new hypothesis respecting the interacting role of the three mechanisms of lifting (spine, muscles, intra-abdominal pressure) to stimulate further research in this field.<p />
