%X While the use of roundabouts in increasing significantly in the U.S., design guidelines for lighting at roundabouts is lagging. This article looks at the lack of uniformity in lighting roundabouts in the U.S. and how this has led to a wide variety of practices with little standardization. A brief review of existing lighting standards and their major lighting components is presented, followed by a look at recent research being conducted. Recommendations are given for design guidelines in areas dealing with nighttime visibility, continuous light, fixtures, coordination with other physical features associated with the roundabout, lighting levels, and vertical illumination at roundabout crosswalks.<p />
