abstract="The paper deals with lightning hazard to a structure and its assessment as a risk due to lightning damages. The idea of lightning risk for structures and its development over the years has been characterised. On this background the definition of the risk and its components has been formulated and their standardized formulas have been developed and explained. Additionally a meaning of first and subsequent strokes in a flash for risk assessment has been considered and finally the procedure of protection measure selection on the base of risk assessment has been shown and final conclusions formulated.",
