abstract="A design-oriented simulation technique for predicting the crash behaviour of automotive side structure without requiring complete vehicle geometry is presented. The technique is based on reduced-order finite element analysis using beam elements and non-linear discrete elements. The localised bending collapse of the pillar is represented by nonlinear springs, and the joint flexibility is accounted for using revolute joint elements. The pillar intrusion levels predicted by the reduced-order model compare well with the corresponding shell element model in both elastic and fully plastic loading cases. <p>Language: en</p>",
