abstract="Ingestion of caustic, especially with intention of suicide, is always a difficult diagnostic and therapeutic problem. The patient having ingested a caustic used to be refered very late to the surgeon, either for acute complications or chronic sequellae. Now, early intervention is always the rule, on the basis of precise clinical, radiological or endoscopie indications. The authors review recent series of literature and their own experience of 51 ingestions of caustics from 1980 to 1991.
