abstract="BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to assess opinions about causes and treatment of suicide ideation and behavior from a lay perspective. Participants: A total of 879 persons (58.2% female; age (years): mean = 32.28, SD = 8.41) participated in an Internet-based questionnaire study.

RESULTS: More than 90% of the respondents attribute causal importance to mental illness, serious life events and perceptions of hopelessness, burdensomeness and social isolation. Nearly 100% consider psychotherapy to be an appropriate treatment for suicide ideation and behavior. Approval rates for various myths about suicidal behavior are comparatively low (< 20%).

DISCUSSION and Conclusion: The overall findings are positive: both significant risk factors for suicidality as well as treatment options are largely known to the respondents. © 2021 S.
