abstract="OBJECTIVE To determine the relationship between adverse childhood life events and suicide ideation among college students, and to explore the mediating role of personality. <br><br>METHODS Totally 1 244 college students from 6 universities were selected by using cluster random sampling method and were investigated with Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation-Chinese Version, Adverse Childhood Events Questionnaire and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised Short Scale for Chinese. <br><br>RESULTS The rate of suicide ideation was 16.64%, with girls higher than boys, rural students higher than urban students. About 84.57% of all participants reported at least one type of adverse childhood life events. Suicide ideation was positively correlated with adverse childhood life events (r = 0.14, P<0.05), psychoticism (r = 0.42, P<0.01) and neuroticism (r = 0.65, P<0.01), while negatively correlated with the introversion-extroversion (r = -0.58, P<0.01). Psychoticism and neuroticism played full mediation role in the relationship between adverse childhood life events and suicide ideation, the pathway coefficients were 0.43 and 0.54 respectively, the mediating effect was 13.19% and 39.33% respectively. <br><br>CONCLUSION Suicide ideation in college students is closely associated with adverse childhood life events and personality characteristics. Personality may play a mediating role between adverse childhood life events and suicide ideation in college students. © Journal Office of Chinese School Health(Bengbu).
