abstract="The purpose of this study is to identify protective factors against suicidal ideation for the elderly and examine the effects of these factors. This is a descriptive research study that analyzed collected data from 142 Korean older people. The data was analyzed through a multiple regression using SPSS 19.0. In this analysis, independent variables included Physical activity, Health-related quality of life, Reasons for living and Optimism, and a dependent variable was suicidal ideation. As a result of regression analysis, protective factors for suicidal ideation for the elderly were found to be survival and coping belief in reasons for living and optimism. These two factors were shown to explain 23% of suicidal ideation of the elderly. In order to reduce suicidal ideation among the elderly, developing a program focusing on reinforcing individuals' strengths and its application is required. The development and application of a program is needed which can help older people strengthen survival and coping beliefs and enhance optimism through the optimism training. © Research India Publications.<p /><p>Language: en</p>",
