abstract="This article explores fragments of a case history of a teenager having attempted suicide to investigate the function of self-destructive risk-taking during adolescence. Determining the identifications at play is of great help in understanding the paradoxical nature of risk-taking in adolescence. For it may be understood as a necessary rite of passage in freeing oneself from original bonds. When this need does not receive recognition and the subject cannot find their rightful place, he or she becomes caught in the snares of melancholic identifications from which escape is desperately sought in the form of self-destructive risk-taking. © L'Esprit du Temps.
