abstract="Common pro and contra arguments that can be found in the literature concerning non-suicide contracts are discussed. Taking into account criticism of such contracts a therapeutic guideline on how to proceed when establishing a non-suicide contract is presented. Concrete recommendations are particularly given regarding the therapeutic attitude, wording of the text, compliance, freedom of choice, involvement of the therapist, a manageable time frame, coping strategies as well as indication and contraindication.
