abstract="To its widest extent, non-compliance may be defined as a treatment refusal and a giving up of follow-up treatment. In case of lethal disease, non-compliance may entail death. Such wilful behaviour, which is prevailing during teenager years, may be considered a form of suicide. Therefore, the authors stress their similarities and underline the connections between the psychopathological mechanisms of suicide during adolescence and those of non-compliance. This investigation stands for a great interest regarding the assistance to teenagers who suffer a lethal disease. It aims first at improving the understanding of non-compliance and second raises a reflection on the adequate means to set up in order to prevent it. © 2005 Elsevier SAS.
