abstract="A retrospective study was performed by the authors about all patients who made suicide attempt by exogenous intoxication seen by the Centro de Assistencia Toxicologica de Pernambuco during 1995. The sample was formed with 89 patients. The results identified August and October as the major and minor frequency of suicide attempts, respectively. There was a significant predominance of the female sex (59,5%), and according to age range there was predominance of adults (58,4%) and then by adolescents (31,4%). A percentage of 77,6% of the population studied came from Recife and other cities from the metropolitan area, drugs were mainly used for suicide attempt, as observed in third world countries. Psychotropic drugs were the most used. Authors conclude by calling attention to the necessity of doctor be attentive to the identification, treatment and prevention of this public health problem.<p /><p>Language: pt</p>",
