abstract="Suicide is increasing, particularly among young Black males and among children and adolescents. In spite of treatment for depression, addictions, and childhood traumas, some patients continue to be suicidal and appear to be &quot;hooked&quot; on suicidal fantasies and behaviors. In SO selected patients, there is overwhelming presence of seven characteristics of addiction as they apply directly to suicide, suggesting an addiction to suicidal fantasies and behaviors. Possible predisposition, neurochemistry, and progression of the illness are discussed. The critical element is mood alteration, which distinguishes suicide addiction from other patterns of suicide and from a compulsion.
