abstract="To identify the safety implications of highway shoulders, data were collected for 263 linear miles of two-foot shoulders and 404-linear miles of four-foot shoulders in 11 rural Alabama countries. None of the highways evaluated were within incorporated town or city limits. The data included construction costs of 59 highway segments and a total of 1,763 crashes. Overall, the study does not show the increased construction of cost of four-foot shoulders on state routes to be justified by an increase in traffic safety. <p>Language: en</p>",
