abstract="In order to develop social risk evaluation criteria of global passenger ships，based on passenger ship accident data from global integrated shipping information system（GISIS）database between 2005 and 2018，social risk acceptance criteria were established by using F⁃N curve according to ALARP principle. Then，risk levels of passenger ships of different accident types，gross tonnage and classification societies were evaluated respectively. The results show that anchor point of social risk acceptance criteria for passenger ships is（10，3.93×10-4），which is more stringent than current international maritime organization（IMO）standard for passenger roro ships. Capsizing，fire or explosion，among all accident types，are in ALARP region. And social risk level of medium tonnage passenger ships is also in ALARP area while that of small，large and super large ships in acceptable risk area. Moreover，ship from international association of classification societies（IACS）has lower social risk lower than those from other classification societies. © 2020 China Safety Science Journal.
