abstract="We hear the familiar sound too often: screeching tires as a private vehicle or prehospital transport flies into our ambulance bay. "Trauma in the trauma bay," the triage nurse pages overhead. The emergency and trauma teams quickly respond, too often finding a victim of violence unstable or pulseless from multiple penetrating wounds. Many of the patients are stabilized or rushed to surgery. Others are lost in spite of the heroic efforts of all staff, nurses, and physicians involved. Far too many cases end with world-shattering news being delivered to anxious families.

Language: en
",
