abstract="A small number of footways (pedestrian rights-of-way beside a road carriageway) had been converted to joint cycle pedestrian use before 1983. In 1983 a study was undertaken by JMP Consultants Ltd for the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) to review the working of 10 footways which had been converted to joint cycle/pedestrian use. The JMP study did not investigate the changes, if any, in the accident numbers on the routes containing the shared footways because most of the 10 schemes had been installed too recently to provide an adequate period for accident analysis after implementation. A further study has now been made by TRRL to analyse changes in the pattern of injury accidents to cyclists on 18 roads where footways have been converted to joint use. <p>Language: en</p>",
