abstract="Understanding why and how people choose to travel is an important consideration for politicians, transport planners, academics and other interested groups. Of the factors that influence travel behaviour, one of the most commonly cited as having a significant influence is income. This article presents a cross-sectional model that relates the income in UK Local Authority Wards to one facet of travel behaviour, namely car-ownership. All the data used is freely available from the Office for National Statistics' Census 2001 web site. For the analysis, the technique of Geographically Weighted Regression is applied. This technique takes account of the geographical proximity of each observation - giving a higher weight to observed data from nearby Wards. The article concludes with the suggested application to other UK Census travel to work statistics and how the analysis may be enhanced. <p>Language: en</p>",
