abstract="The impact of U-turn on roundabouts is greater than any other movement because once traffic is on the roundabout, they have priority over traffic on all other arms. Yet, the extent of impact has not been clearly quantified for urban roundabouts, which carry significant volumes of traffic during peak periods. A typical urban roundabout with high U-turn movements and features reflecting a normal size urban roundabout was selected as the study area. A VISSIM micro simulation model was built using classified turning counts in order to undertake the study. Calibration and validation of the model were carried out to ensure that the correct traffic flows and queues have been represented. The model was used to assess the performance of an existing network, and to test the potential impact of the proposed re-routing of U-turn traffic. In addition, a series of detailed operational assessments were undertaken to identify a variety of U-turn re-routing scenarios and to assess their impact on the roundabout. <p>Language: en</p>",
