IN RESPONSE: We discussed the personalized, or smart gun, technology mentioned by Dr. Franke in the rationale for Position 8, a position that was reaffirmed from the 2014 position paper on reducing firearm injuries and deaths in the United States (1). We determined that further research on the development of personalized guns was needed but do support any efforts to improve and modify firearms to make them as safe as possible.
