abstract="The procedures of the US system of motor vehicle safety regulation are reviewed. Their effectiveness is examined in the light of the success in introducing regulations ensuring that vehicles incorporate safety features already recognized by most vehicle manufacturers, and the difficulties encountered in attempting to advance and legislate for new safety technologies.
