abstract="The Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) is an effective, low-cost method to improve pedestrian accommodations at signalized intersections. An LPI causes the walk indication to appear before the green signal for parallel traffic, allowing pedestrians to start crossing a major street before conflicting vehicles begin to turn. This article examines how LPIs help to prevent the four conflicts between pedestrians and motorists that are present in crosswalks at a typical intersection. It also discusses Virginia Department of Transportation's successful implementation of of elongated LPIs at six suburban intersections in northern Virginia.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>",
