To the Editor: Examination of comparative funding of biomedical research is often used to highlight disparities, thus allowing reconsideration of priorities of federal support. Trauma remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. However, compared with other conditions per each year of potential life lost, funding of trauma-related research appears woefully low. Drs Stark and Shah reported on the comparative total research funding of a subset of trauma involving firearms, employing the accessible metric of morality rate across the top 30 causes of death in the United States and using the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH)–driven search approach of the Federal RePORTER database.
