abstract="The technical examination centers and their officially recognized experts have a long history in driving-license testing and its further development. This history was guided by their role as state entrusted intermediary between man, technology and the environment. The last decade was a special period of considerable progress: the introduction of the computer-based theoretical driving test was followed by the science-based optimization of the practical driving test as a systematic driving behaviour observation with an improved electronic documentation tool and a detailed performance feedback to the driving-licence candidates. The main future challenges are the development of a traffic perception test on the one hand and the adaption of the practical driving-licence test to the increasingly dynamic changes of motor vehicle technology on the other hand.
