abstract="The study of terrorism is often complicated by the tendency of groups to issue false or misleading claims of responsibility, a practice which dates back at least to the late nineteenth century. This paper describes and categorizes various patterns of false claims and attributions in contemporary European terrorism. These deceptions are practiced both by terrorist groups themselves and sometimes by official agencies. The paper also argues for a more subtle and critical evaluation of claims of responsibility than has been found in some recent accounts of terrorist movements.<p /><p>Language: en</p>",
