abstract="California accident records for 1948 were examined for the relation between shoulder width and accident occurrence on two-lane tangents. For similar traffic volumes, shoulders 6 feet wide were safer than narrower shoulders and, also, (at volumes over 5,000 vehicles per day) safer than wider shoulders.<p />",
