abstract="One hundred patients, who had committed a first suicidal attempt during the years 2004 and 2005, were submitted to a psychiatric interview in the Center for preventing suicide, on the second day of their hospitalization in the Clinic of Urgent Medicine and Toxicology. The levels of depression and anxiety were assessed by the Hamilton scale for depression (HAMD) and Hamilton scales for anxiety (HAMA). The patients were divided in two groups: age 15-25 (n=70) and age older than 25 (n=30). Age-matched healthy volunteers (n=26) were also studied. The results suggest that all patients with a first suicidal attempt showed signs of depression according to HAMD, and a high level of anxiety, whereas the younger patients showed mean scores for minor depression. The older patients showed signs of major depression, within a depressive episode, which required medical treatment. All younger patients were submitted to psychiatric counselling for one month after the suicidal attempt. The healthy patients showed no signs for depression and anxiety.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>",
