abstract="To illustrate the value of qualitative methods in researching suicide, the authors will present some of the findings of a sociological autopsy study, based on 100 cases from a British coroner's office. It is widely acknowledged from large-scale studies that men seem to be more brittle to relationship breakdown than women. A sociological autopsy approach allows qualitative, interpretive insights into this issue. There will be a comparison of the socio-cultural context of relationship breakdown suicides in men and women, with particular focus on the significance of children and contemporary sociological theory on intimacy and family life. Whilst the evidence presented will be primarily qualitative, there will also be some reflection on the relationship between qualitative and quantitative data in the study of individual suicides. There will also be methodological reflection on the analysis of multi-modal qualitative data.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>",
