abstract="Introduction: This study was undertaken to identify socio-economic risk factors for first registered suicide attempts and to analyse the influence of psychiatric morbidity on the correlation between socio-economic factors and suicide attempt risk. Methodology: The study is a register-based case-control study. A total of 19 potential socio-economic risk factors for suicide attempts, such as education, occupation, social relations, psychiatric morbidity etc., were estimated. The influence of psychiatric morbidity on socio-economic risk factors was analysed by adding psychiatric morbidity to a univariate model and calculating the reduction in percentage in risk ratio. Participants: 1,949 individuals were identified from the Register for Suicide Attempts with a first registered suicide attempt during 1996 to 2001. 38,795 individuals for comparison were matched by gender and age. Results: We found a large influence from psychiatric morbidity on socio-economic risk factors for suicide attempts; especially on education, occupation and social relations. Conclusion: In order to understand the suicide attempt risk it is important to focus on the causal relationship between factors and risk. Part of the influence from socio-economic factors on suicide attempt risk is attributed by psychiatric morbidity. This indicates that socio-economic factors can be mediators in the pathway from psychiatric morbidity to suicide attempt risk.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>",
