abstract="A consortium of researchers, based at the University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, Scottish Development Centre for Mental Health and London School of Economics, has been commissioned to undertake an evaluation of the initial phase (2003-2006) of Choose Life, the national strategy and action plan to prevent suicide in Scotland (launched in December 2002). The objectives of the evaluation are: to assess whether a sustainable infrastructure is being developed nationally and locally; to measure progress towards the implementation of strategic milestones; to examine whether and how Choose Life is stimulating effective practice; and to make recommendations which will guide the next phase of the strategy. Additionally, an economic analysis has been undertaken in order to assess the true level of investment in Choose Life activities (monetary and in-kind), identify the allocation and use of resources over time, and estimate potential economic benefits of reaching the Choose Life aim of reducing suicide by 20% over the period 2003-2013. Using a theory-based approach which incorporates a longitudinal perspective and detailed case studies, the evaluation has drawn on a range of methods, including interviews (electronic and in-person), observation, documentary analysis and participatory workshops.
