abstract="Suicide is a global problem. Deliberate self-harm (DSH), a precursor to suicide, is one of the top ten causes of death in all age groups. There is a need to analyze the reasons and pattern of DSH to formulate an effective strategy to bring down incidence of DSH. An attempt was made to describe the pattern and reasons of DSH in Western Development Region of Nepal. 205 patients of DSH were admitted from February 2011 to June 2012 at the Emergency Department of Manipal Teaching Hospital, Pokhara were included. Out of that 33.2% and 66.8% were males and females respectively. 81.5% were Hindu and 18.5% were Buddhist. Most belonged to Janajati community (36.1%) and least (8.3%) from Newar community. Main method of self injury was consuming organo-phosphorus compound (31.2%), rat poison (25.9%), least common method was hanging or self inflicted injury (6.3%). Status of the patients when brought to the Emergency/ Casualty department were; in unconscious state (19.5%), critical (14.6%) or drowsy (12.2%). Reasons for attempted self harm were either failure in love affairs (13.2%), academic failure (4.9%) or family dispute (76.1%). Such knowledge of the pattern and reason of deliberate self–harm can be useful in planning preventive strategies.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>",
