Louis Appleby, professor of psychiatry at the University of Manchester, has had a long interest in preventing suicide and launched the first national prevention plan in 2002. He was national director for mental health from 2000 to 2010 and national director for offender health from 2010 to 2014. He remains chair of the group that guides implementation of the cross government strategy on suicide prevention, published in September 2012.
