abstract="VioLit summary:OBJECTIVE:The objective of this study by Lorion and Ross was to examine eight Office for Substance Abuse Prevention (OSAP) programs' descriptive impacts on individual and familial risk factors associated with alcohol and other drug (AOD) use.METHODOLOGY:A descriptive non-experimental design using ethnographic research procedures was employed to evaluate 8 programs selected from 130 OSAP funded model demonstration programs in 1987. Selection was based on defined goals and informativeness of each program's evaluation, and 3 significant lessons learned from the OSAP program development efforts including: 1) interventions were most effective in lowering rates of AOD use when targeted toward high-risk youth, 2) commmunity-based preventive intervention is multi-faceted and complex, and 3) program evaluation involves more than determining the proportion of program participants using AOD to nonrecipient counterparts.FINDINGS/DISCUSSION:Examination of program descriptions revealed that OSAP programs provide information for preventive intervention and methodological challenges yet to be solved. These reflect the reality or feasibility of preventing AOD use among high-risk youth.AUTHORS' RECOMMENDATIONS:As stated by the authors, "Participants may never show program impacts directly but may reflect program influence in how they related to their children and role models they provide as adults." (CSPV Abstract - Copyright © 1992-2007 by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence, Institute of Behavioral Science, Regents of the University of Colorado)KW - Program EvaluationKW - Program EffectivenessKW - Prevention ProgramKW - Juvenile Substance UseKW - Substance Use PreventionKW - Alcohol Use PreventionKW - Drug Use PreventionKW - Individual Risk FactorsKW - Family Risk FactorsKW - Substance Use CausesKW - Substance Use Risk FactorsKW - Alcohol Use CausesKW - Alcohol Use Risk FactorsKW - Drug Use Risk FactorsKW - Drug Use CausesKW - At Risk YouthKW - At Risk Juvenile

Language: en
",
