abstract="OBJECTIVE:The objective of this article by Kratcoski and Kratcoski was to examine youth who experienced violent abuse as a child and who later acted out violently towards immediate family members or caretakers.METHODOLOGY:This was a non-experimental case study of delinquent youths from the Ohio Youth Commission who were incarcerated in one of four institutions for serious male offenders. The authors surveyed the case files for 863 youths and abstracted and interpreted the data. The data typically included demographic information (sex, race, age, and nature and number of offenses) and case summaries which had information about family histories including victimization of the delinquent youth.FINDINGS/DISCUSSION:26% of the files reviewed indicated the individual youth had expereinced child abuse. 85% of the youth who were victims of child abuse were abused on more than one occasion. 45% of the abused youth had directed violence towards family members and/or caretakers, and 18% of nonabused youth committed violent acts towards family members or caretakers.AUTHORS' RECOMMENDATIONS:The authors state that it cannot be assumed that children who experience abuse are predisposed to abusive behavior. They stated that further study on contextual factors is needed.
