abstract="The NHTSA Fatal Accident Reporting System file was analyzed to identify conditions under which passenger cars struck the side or rear of tractor-semitrailers. The chief finding was that most such collisions occur at night. This suggests that car drivers do not see the semitrailer soon enough to avoid striking it. Making semitrailers more visible at night should prevent some car-into-semitrailer collisions.<p />",
