abstract="Question: Among abused children, what visceral injuries occur, how do they compare to those in accidentally injured children, and what is the value of screening tests to detect abdominal injury?  Question type: Descriptive  Study design: Systematic review  Researchers from multiple institutions in the United Kingdom conducted a systematic literature review to characterize the range of abusive visceral injuries in children, compare these injuries to accidental injuries, and assess the value of screening tests to detect abdominal injury in abused children. The investigators conducted a systematic search using a standardized methodology to identify pertinent studies published from 1950 to 2011.
