abstract="In order to study the effect of gradient and length of long and steep downgrade on traffic accidents, data from 1,276 traffic accidents occurring in 5 different downgrades was collected. According to the distribution of accident on the distance between the starting points of the downgrades and accident locations, conclusions were drawn that: 1) traffic accidents are concentrated on the latter half section of the downgrades; and 2) the amount of accidents increases as the distance increases. Regressions to the accident rate with gradient of downgrade of the location and average gradient of given downgrade were made using linear and exponential functions separately, and the results of regressions and the coefficient of determination were compared. Results reveal that the correlation of the average gradient of downgrade and the accident rate is more significant than that of corresponding gradient of downgrade of the accident locations and rates.<p />",
