abstract="The article studies the incidence of injuries to the head and brain in children and teenagers up to 19 years of age. It analyzes patients' records at the dubrovnik medical centre, department of surgery, where injured children and teenagers were treated for head and brain injuries during a five-year period (1981-1985). The study disclosed a high incidence of injured children and teenagers (35%) in the overall number of injured persons. The predominant number of surveyed injuries was caused by road accidents (80%). Out of the road accident related injuries, a fall from a motorcycle accounted for 20% of injuries. Head contusion (45.4%) and brain concussion (44.9%) constituted 90% of all injuries to the head and brain. Rapid development of road traffic and the increase in vehicle ownership have resulted in the increase of road accident related injuries involving children and teenagers. The most commonly encountered injuries in this population group are those of the head and brain.<p />",
