abstract="The article reviews a randomly chosen sample of 631 male bus and lorry drivers between 18 and 50 years old. The bus drivers were employed with urban public transport, suburban or regional transport organizations, and the lorry drivers in social or private business. This study was conducted as a part of a major interdisciplinary clinical and epidemiological research project in slovenia. It was found out that a large number of occupational risks and road traffic related risks affect the health of the studied driver population. The incidence of occupational diseases (exceeding 62 times the average as reported for slovenia), high frequency of sick-leave and the incidence of chronic conditions in the surveyed drivers all point to a considerable exposure to various health hazards in this segment of driver population. Drivers over 50 fall into the risk group. It is argued that a shorter period of service with benefits for premature retirement is justified for bus and lorry drivers.<p />",
