abstract="Throughout the 1980s consideration of the policing of'domestic violence? has been dominated by notions of the deterrence value of arrest. This paper begins by considering the evidence for and against such a claim. Subsequent discussion is directed towards a description of the practice of policing as it pertains to this difficult area of police work. The paper details the ?traditional response? of police and then goes on to show how two ?domestic violence units? have sought to modify it. The paper also considers examples of good police practice as well as highlighting matters of concern for feminists.<p />",
