abstract="Presents a conceptualization of the etiology of physical abuse between 2 adult partners. Case notes collected over 4 yrs from a counseling center for domestic violence illustrate that rage and resulting physically abusive behavior are complex phenomena and that attempts to define these phenomena in terms of anger, control, or psychopathology are misleading. Because abusive episodes appear to be individual in nature, a dynamic interpretation of particular interactions and their context is important for treatment.
