abstract="Sniezek et al describe the potential role of hospital discharge data in providing information regarding causes of severe, nonfatal injuries. Coding the external cause of an injury using E codes provided by the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification would provide standardized information regarding the cause of injuries that require hospitalization. Another source of data on cause of injury not described by the authors is emergency department databases. This source would provide information regarding both severe injuries that require hospitalization and less severe injuries that can be managed in the emergency department.<p />",
