abstract="Using the concept of the thermodynamic control volume, the momentum and energy equations for a train moving at uniform velocity through a long inclined tunnel have been examined in detail. In particular, different inertial frames of reference have been employed to demonstrate the dependence of energy transfer in the form of work on the frame of reference. Furthermore, it has been shown that correct accounting in the energy balance may only be achieved by taking cognizance of this dependence in quantifying the work components in the energy equation. The theoretical analysis and considerations are completely general and apply to all modes of transport in tunnels.<p />",
