abstract="The device evaluated in the present study for the control of assaultive and self- destructive behaviors in retardates consists of a portable, battery-operated electrical pulse generator which delivers an aversive, yet harmless, shock to the skin in response to the activation of accelerometers attached to a non-restraining jacket worn by the subject. Because the accelerometers respond only to violent movements or impact forces, the two retarded subjects, when not engaging in assaultive or self-destructive behaviors, could move freely through the environment and engage in a normal range of activities without receiving shock.<p />",
