abstract="The Required Sweat Rate (SRreq, ISO 7933) is examined based on the data of 448 field studies from German iron- and steel and glass industries and of 199 laboratory experiments. The comparison with different heat stress indices (ITS, P4SR, WBGT) shows that SRreq gives the best prediction of strain caused by muscular work and heat, if strain is measured by sweat rate, heart rate or body temperature. The maximum exposure time given by the evaluation of SRreq provides 'safe exposure' so that the index prevents high strain and possible health hazard. Both ISO-indices, SRreq and WBGT, give comparable results regarding the 8-h exposure. So, as the standard procedure, conditions may be checked using WBGT, but for a more detailed analysis, SRreq has to be evaluated.<p />",
