abstract="The extreme heat experienced by the West Central States has resulted in excess deaths for two weeks. During the 28th and 29th weeks the 9 major cities of the West North Central States reported 52 percent more deaths for each of these two weeks than the corresponding median of the previous three years. The 13 major cities of the West South Central States reported 14 and 31 percent more deaths in the same weeks. The number of deaths dropped back to the median value for the current week.",
