abstract="Correctional health care as a predominantly nurse-driven system is examined, and the correctional nurse role, responsibilities, and skills are summarized. The author describes a transformational health care model intended to improve correctional health care through emphasis on provider health promotion and patient self-responsibility. This transformational model serves as the conceptual framework for a new educational program in advanced practice correctional nursing offered at the University of Colorado—Colorado Springs. This program is also grounded in the work of the Violence Intervention and Prevention Center at the University of Colorado—Colorado Springs Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences.<p />",
