abstract="Ever since antiquity, man has used simple technical aids to facilitate materials handling. The great technical inventions of the nineteenth century made it possible to replace the men in handling operations by machines. At present some 30 % of all occupational accidents are connected with materials handling. More than half of these occur in manual operations.The increasing weights of loads and higher speeds cause greater energy and growing hazards. This paper presents basic solutions for the prevention of accidents due to the impact of energy. Safety can be increased considerably especially through the mechanization, the automation, and the remote control of dangerous tasks. New problems are connected with operations not part of the usual routine and with disturbances.<p />",
